What Is The History Of The Envelope?
Envelopes are has bee around for a long time now. Since the 1800s, people are using hand-made envelopes to send letters to their loved ones and for business purposes. These envelopes are made form folded papers which the people use to hide the contents of their letters. In 1845, the first envelope making machine was made by Edwin Hill and his partner Warren de la Rue.
The envelope that the machine that produced was made from a custom shaped paper. The shape of the paper used by the machine to create envelopes was shaped like a diamond or rhombus, which is pre-cut, and is folded by the machine to make the rectangular shaped envelope. The machine applies paste to the edges of the paper and heats it to secure the edges. An overlapping flap is left unfastened with adhesive. People will have to use a wax seal if the want to seal the contents of the envelopes. The overlapping flaps is just enough for the seal to be placed properly.
The reason for using the diamond shaped paper was not really known. However, there are some who believe that the diamond-shaped paper that was used b the machine was used because of the way people are doing their hand-made envelopes. There are also some who believe that the diamond-shaped paper has flaps which are very efficient in producing a rectangular shaped envelope.
This type of machine was used to manufacture envelopes for 50 years before a pre-gummed envelope machine maker was developed. This made the use of wax seals obsolete as these new envelopes can be sealed by just applying moisture on the edges of the flap.
As time passes by, new technologies have been developed and new styles of envelopes were made. Today we can see different types of envelopes that are circulating everywhere. Even in today’s age where most people can use the computer to communicate and even send messages or emails to each other, the use of envelopes are not yet forgotten. Businesses still use envelopes to send important letters, courts issue subpoena’s using envelopes, and some people still use envelopes to send mail to someone.
New designs of envelopes are now available. Manufacturers are designing creative envelopes for people to use. Business owners have many different types of envelopes that they can choose from like window envelopes and security envelopes. The windows envelope alone has many variations to choose from. The envelope has been an important tool for communication for a long time. Up until now the use of the envelope may have declined, but they are still very much in demand especially for businesses.
