High Adrenaline Kids' Play
There are many moments I think of my childhood, and particularly the kind of intense play that was taking place outdoors that make me realise how risky and dangerous those moments were. However, the ones me and my friends liked the most where those that were adrenaline-high. Being a kid, danger and risk has great attraction as it goes hand in hand with great pleasure and excitement.
In order to give you an idea, I will try recall some of the most hazardous ones with the first one being some sort of bicycle chase all around the place. We were divided into 2 teams where the first one was cycling away in order to hide and the second one had to find them. Locating someone wan't enough as that person would have to be taken out of the game by actually being caught!. The outcome was incredible chasing all around the neighborhood ignoring everything and everyone that would be on our way. Exporation wasn't always without victims or injuries but minor ones.
The most memorable one was a game we used to call ourselves 'explorers'. That involved breaking into abandoned buildings such as mansions, villas, factories and try to discover unusual and new things that would blow our imagination away. Once we got into a massive dilapidated, rundown mansion that apparently was abandoned in the 70s and we were wondering in it for about three hours. It really was like a massive, endless labyrinth and we were totally scared as eerie sounds were coming from all over. Security dogs were our biggest nightmare, although we never had the chance to come across them.
Once, we broke into an abandoned warehouse that was owened by an aviation company which had gone bankrupt. In the various compartments, which were not totally empty, we could find some many unusual objects. Most of those object were looking really weird and hostile as noone knew what their use was high density connectors, filter connectors or PCB connectors.
Looking at my kids being in the living room playing with the game console for so many hours, I really wonder how many great emptions they are missing out by not being able to experience any high-risk adrenaline game like the ones of my childhood.
Riding to the Rescue of Rhodanines (Corante.com/pipeline)
There's a new paper coming to the defense of rhodanines, a class of compound
that has been described as "polluting the scientific literature". Industrial
drug discovery people tend to look down on them, but they show up a lot, for
sure.
This new paper starts off sounding like a call to arms for rhodanine fans, but
when you actually read it, I don't think that there's much grounds for
disagreement. (That's a phenomenon that's worth writing about sometime by
itself - the disconnects between title/abstract and actual body text that
occur in the scientific literature). As I see it, the people with a low
opinion of rhodanines are saying "Look out! These things hit in a lot of
assays, and they're very hard to develop into drugs!". And this paper, when
you read the whole thing, is saying something like "Don't throw away all the
rhodanines yet! They hit a lot of things, but once in a while one of them can
be developed into a drug!" The argument is between people who say that
elephants are big and people who say that they have trunks.
The authors prepared a good-sized assortment of rhodanines and ...
