How can I check my external hard drive for viruses without risking infecting my new computer?
I got a pretty bad virus on my old computer. I was able to save my documents, pictures, and music off of it by dumping them on to my external hard drive. However I'm worried the virus may have managed to infect the external hard drive. Is there any way I can check the external hard drive for viruses without putting my new computer at risk?
If you have the money, you can go to a place like Best Buy, and they'll check it for you.
If you want to do it by yourself, there really isn't a easy way. Chances are, if it is a powerful virus, it'll be in the files you moved.
You can either use your old computer to run a virus scan, or get a professional to do it for you. If your computer can't do that, and you can't get help, your going to have some problems.
The only other way I can think of you might be able to do easily is setup another user account on your computer with no administrative ability at all. Then use a "sandbox" program and open the drive. Scan it for viruses.
Of course, there are possibilities that could cause your new computer to get infected. These ways are SAFER, but not a guarantee. Your only guarantee would be to get a professional to check it out. There really isn't much you can do if you don't have some of the software/equipment or expertise.
