How Green Is Your Workplace?

We've all seen the TV campaigns, news stories and general buzz about reducing your carbon footprint at home. An army of newly-enlisted eco-warriors are going about switching to energy saving bulbs, insulating their lofts and stopping putting their TVs on standby.  That's all well and good, but carbon emissions from individuals is just a tiny piece of the pie.In truth, most of the world's CO2 emissions derives from companies, businesses and organisations. What this means is that even a small change in a large organisation can have a massive impact.

So what, I hear you say. I don't have any control over that. Its down to the management to take care of the company's environmental policy. But that's just not the case. Everyone who has a place of work can have an impact on their company's carbon footprint.Additionally, this can have a far more powerful impact compared to the difference you can make just at home.

Here are some pointers, small and large, on achieving a greener workplace:

  1. Recycle office waste. Offices throw out a huge volume of paper and other recyclable waste every week - much more than any family could manage. Bring in some recycling collection bins, ideally one set on every floor. Speak to your local council about this as there are often free schemes to do this for you.
  2. Cut down on driving. Set up a car pooling scheme to cut down on exhaust emissions. Alternatively, how about leaving the car at home and walking or cycling to work.
  3. Energy Saving Light Bulbs. In the home, switching a few bulbs will only do so much. Consider, however, the sheer number of bulbs in the office - switiching to energy saving's gonna make a big difference.
  4. Eco-Friendly Computers. The energy usage of IT systems is huge for the majority of companies and organisations. One of the basic things you can do is make sure PCs and monitors are properly switched off at the end of the day. But don't just stop there - by getting your IT department to review the company's "green baseline" you can multiply the impact. Get them to perform some proper asset tracking on all office IT equipment, using professional asset management software, a business can dramatically reduce its carbon footprint and help meet increasingly stringent government environmental requirements.
  5. Campaigning. Go to the next level. There's serious power in numbers, and if you can get even a few eco-minded colleagues to campaign together you can achieve real results.  By pressuring the management to take their green obligations seriously we little people can really make a big difference. Very often going green also saves a lot of money, as the TV ad above shows.Let's take the example of a business involved with vehicles or transportation of any kind - consider the massive carbon footprint this activity creates. Pushing them to properly review their transport and logistics management and make the smallest of improvements can save them big money and dramatically reduce their carbon footprint in the process.

These are only a few ideas. What I really wanted to achieve with this piece is to get people thinking about these issues and how it applies to you. Let me know your thoughts and ideas below!

Tiger - I have an Eco-Drive - the capacitor went bad and it stopped working.....doesn't seem like Tiger will ever stop winning!!

2011 Lexus CT 200h: A Prius-like hybrid for the fast crowd (CNN - The Wheel Deal)

When gasoline prices start to rise, the thoughts of economy-minded buyers
reliably turn to the Toyota Prius, the mileage champ. Edmunds.com reports
consideration of the 50-miles-per-gallon Toyota Prius among its online
shoppers is up more than 30% since the beginning of the year -- triple the
increase for all hybrids and small cars in general.

Some shoppers, however, may feel diffident about the Prius. More than two
million have been sold MORE
