Random computer shutdown/freeze?
It has come come to be that my computer will randomly shutdown/freeze, as I'm not completely sure what to call it. I will be doing something (It happens with most of my programs) when my computer will cease to rotate the fans, hard drive, anything, the monitor will go black, but the green light behind my power button says that the computer's still on.
Here's a rundown of my specs:
nVidia GeForce FX 5500 (AGP, not PCI(e))
Maxtor 500 GB hard drive (DiamondMax 21)
pcchips p23g V3.0 Mobo
(http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWebSite/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?DetailID=387&CategoryID=1&DetailName=Feature&MenuID=44&LanID=0)
Pci USB hub (Belkin 5 port hub, 4 external, 1 internal)
USB SoundCard (Creative X-FI External)
1 120mm case fan (I know I need another one)
Intel Pentium D Processor
Rhycom SGT ATX550W PSU
Anyone who can help me with this problem will be extremely thanked. I can temporarily solve the problem with an oscillating fan next to the tower with the side cover off.
Is your current setup all new?
Did you use older parts?
The way I see it, your problem could come from three main sources!
1) Not enough fans/air flow (as you have indicated) causing heat build-up.
2) Insufficient power from your PSU
3) Probable near failure of the PSU
Item 3 is what happened to me, my computer would cease to function unexpectedly until one day, the PSU emitted a strong smell, finally started smoking and would have caught fire if I did not pull the plug.

Just a couple months after selling its 1 millionth hybrid hard drive, Seagate

drive and the announcement of its new enhanced Seagate desktop drives. The
Barracuda, Seagate's flagship, has been revamped to offer performance of 7200
RPM for every capacity -- from 250GB up to 3TB.
